The Water We Waste.
In the year 2020, fashion was the world’s second largest polluter, following only the oil industry. Although freshwater is a limited resource, billions of gallons of water are still wasted, with nearly 20% of wastewater contributed by the fashion industry.
My collection, “The Water We Waste” was meant to underscore the severity of the issue we all must face as consumers and contributors in one way or another. Inspired by Dyecoo CO2 textile dye processes, the idea that knitting yarns as well could be treated with this technique was the foundation of the collection. CO2 textile dyeing is a leading sustainable dye solution because it does not use water, but rather a carbon dioxide gas and also can be applied to mass production. The collection draws on imagery from the Greek myth of the river Styx, which flows to Hades and evokes the ominous future for all mortals.
